Résumé	Documentaire sur le cheminement à travers l'Europe de centaines de Juifs, rescapés du nazisme, qui tentent de se rendre en Palestine avec l'aide de la Haganah, noyau de la future armée de l'Etat d'Israël. Venant de Pologne, de Russie ou de Hongrie, ils embarquent en Italie à bord d'un bateau clandestin. En 1947, un écrivain et cinéaste américain nommé Meyer Levin crée une docu-fiction "Les Clandestins". Dans ce film, le spectateur découvre la vie des jeunes hommes et femmes qui ont participé à l' immigration clandestine en Palestine. Meyer Levin est né à Chicago en 1905. En 1943, il travaille comme reporter de guerre et accompagne l'armée américaine en Europe. En avril 1945, il découvre, parmi les premiers, avec les forces américaines, le camp de concentration de Ohrdruf, un camp lié à Buchanwald. Ayant vu de près, le sort tragique du peuple juif durant la Shoah, Levin mettra désormais toute son énergie dans la lutte pour créer une nouvelle vie en Palestine. À cette fin, il filme la docu-fiction "Les clandestins» en accompagnant les groupes de réfugiés juifs dans leur voyage difficile et périlleux vers la Palestine. Pour contextualiser les événements qu'il filmait Levin tisse une intrigue, celle d'un couple de jeunes mariés, Sara et Mika Wilner, (joués par les acteurs amateurs Tereska Torres, l'épouse de Meyer Levin, et Yankel Mikalwich,) deux personnages qui servent à personnifier les milliers d'anonymes qui entreprennent cet exode. À certains moments dans le film, Levin met ses acteurs au sein de la séquence, et leur histoire se confond avec l'histoire réelle des clandestins. Le film s'est intitulé tout d'abord “ Lo Tafchidunu/ les clandestins”, ensuite en 1948 “The Voyage of the Unafraid” et en 1961 “The Real Exodus”. In 1947, an intrepid American filmmaker named Meyer Levin captured this story in his film “The Illegals.” In Levin’s docudrama, the viewer is offered a fascinating window into the lives of the young men and women who partook in the illegal immigration into Palestine. It is not a series of interviews, but rather allows the viewer to bear witness to real events as they unfold, and is confronted by the unshakable drive and fortitude of these survivors as they make their resolute journey to Eretz Israel. An American Jewish filmmaker, Meyer Levin was born in Chicago in 1905. In 1943, he worked with the American army in Europe as a war reporter. In April 1945, he and French photographer Eric Schwab were the first ones among the American liberating forces to enter the horrific concentration camp of Ohrdruf, a sub camp of Buchanwald. Having seen first hand the catastrophic fate that had befallen the Jewish people during the Holocaust, the focus of Levin’s work and energy became their struggle to create new lives in Palestine. To this end he filmed the docudrama “The Illegals” while accompanying groups of Jewish refugees as they made the difficult and perilous journey to Palestine. To contextualize the events he was filming Levin weaves into the story the subplot of a fictional young married couple, Sara and Mika Wilner, (played by the amateur actors Tereska Torres (Mrs. Levin) and Yankel Mikalwich,) two characters who serve to personify the unnamed thousands undertaking this mass exodus. At certain points in the film, Levin places these actors within the footage, and melds their story with the historical story that he is telling.
