Deported as a child to a concentration camp in 1942, Pierre has been married for 15 years to Helene, a non-Jewish Frenchwoman. 1961 finds them living in a prosperous bourgeois life in Tel Aviv. Helen works; Pierre is an engineer, currently working on an irrigation scheme in the Negev desert. But the impending trial of Adolf Eichmann disrupts their calm routine. Pierre is tortured by re-awakened memories of the camp and by his own undiscolsed guilt at having survived it by letting another man die in his place; on a domestic level, he is anguished by the arrival of Helene's former lover, Claude, a crusading journalist sent by his paper to cover the trial with Helen's photographer brother Antoine. While Antoine falls passionately in love with Tamar, a young Sabra serving in the Israeli army, Claude begins a desultory flirtation with Helene which drives a further wedge between her and Pierre. Despite the entreaties of his secretary, Sonia, herself a camp survivor, Pierre steadfastly refuses to testify at Eichmann's trial, and, unable to communicate his despair, even contemplates suicide. It is only when Helene, to whom a cynical Claude has explained that her unhappiness is less interesting than her husband's, has reassured him of her love and begged him to save the marriage, that Pierre is able to confess, to her and in the courtroom, what happened in the camp. As Helene embarks on the long and painful task of liberating Pierre from his memories, Tamar joyfully declares her eternal love for Antoine.
