Based on the celebrated best-selling novel by Ayelet Waldman, Portman stars as Emilia Greenleaf, a successful thirtysomething New York attorney who is grieving the loss of her newborn infant daughter, Isabel, while also attempting to mend a fractured relationship with her new stepson. Told partly in flashback, hers is a life full of inevitable emotional complications. As the ‘second wife' of her lawyer husband, Emilia attracts the unyielding ire of his embittered and wronged, non-Jewish ex-wife - superbly played by Lisa Kudrow - and is forced to contend with the resentment of his precocious son. But all this changes when the cause of their newborn daughter's death is finally confirmed. Writer-director Don Roos does a superb job of adapting Waldman's book for the big screen, retaining much of its feel and structure albeit with fewer Jewish references. He places the viewer squarely in Emilia's unsettled universe; we see reality as she does. The surprise is how much tenderness Roos is able to elicit for her, and indeed for all his characters. This is an emotionally vivid yet still sweet drama about renewal and starting over that proves that, even with a pursuit like love, nothing is impossible.
