Résumé	En 1943, avant un “exode biblique” à travers les Alpes, de nombreux Juifs venus de toute l'Europe ont trouvé refuge à Saint Martin Vésubie, dans la zone d'occupation italienne. C'est ce constat insolite – une armée d'occupation qui protège une population occupée - qui a donné envie à André Waksman d'interroger témoins et historiens sur les raisons de gestes individuels et collectifs. qui, à titre personnel, lui ont sauvé la vie. In the summer of 1943, thousands of Jewish refugees in Italian-occupied southern France enjoyed a rare respite from persecution. Their unusual protector, the occupying Italian Army, temporarily shielded local and foreign Jews despite pressure from the Germans and the French Vichy administration. In the Alpine village of Saint Martin Vesubie, life was briefly renewed as Jews went to synagogues, schools and cafes, and Yiddish was heard as often as French. With the invasion of Nazi troops in September, the lull was broken as Jews fled with the retreating Italian Army over the mountains to find shelter. Waksman, whose family survived the Holocaust in southern France, lovingly reconstructs this little-known and fascinating piece of history.
