Résumé	Le romancier canadien Mordechai Richler fait sans aucun doute partie du panthéon des géants juifs qui ont dominé les lettres nord-américaines dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle aux côtés de Saul Bellow, Philip Roth et Norman Mailer entre autres. L'archétype de l'enfant en colère des immigrés, élevé dans un régime de bandes dessinées, le Talmud et les récits de gangsters juifs d'Isaac Babel à Odessa, Richler était, comme ses célèbres collègues, parfaitement placé pour bouleverser le statu quo complaisant de l'après guerre, modifiant définitivement le paysage culturel. Fougueux, contraire et prévisible seulement dans son imprévisibilité, Richler rejette la catégorisation facile, mais ce film engageant parvient à se glisser sous la surface de cette voix artistique incomparable, et à capturer une personnalité qui pourrait tout aussi bien être charmante, douce et réfléchie. Canadian novelist Mordechai Richler undoubtedly belongs in the pantheon of Jewish giants who dominated North American letters in the second half of the twentieth century alongside Saul Bellow, Philip Roth and Norman Mailer amongst others. The archetypal angry child of immigrants, and raised on a diet of comic books, the Talmud and Isaac Babel’s tales of Jewish gangsters in Odessa, Richler was, like his famous colleagues, perfectly placed to shake up the complacent post-war status quo, changing the cultural landscape for good. Feisty, contrary and predictable only in his unpredictability, Richler rejected easy categorization, but this engaging film manages to get under the surface of this incomparable artistic voice, and capture a personality which could just as easily be charming, gentle and thoughtful.
