In his 1950s heyday flamboyant gay furrier Stefan Braun dressed Tel Aviv’s most glamorous women. The city bursts into life in this scintillating documentary, as glorious archive footage - embellished with flourishes of animation - sheds light on this fascinating character’s role among Israeli high society. Arriving from war-torn Hungary, Braun built his business from scratch. From his thriving fur salon to all-night parties, his life seemed charmed, but discreet domesticity with devoted lover Eliezer was never quite enough: the beautiful boys on the beach held the key to his restlessness. The film offers an insight into the challenges faced by homosexuals in Israel during the ‘50s and ‘60s while never shying away from its subject’s failings and foibles. The bitter acrimony between Braun’s family and Eliezer following Braun’s decline and death is devastating. Yet Stefan Braun is ultimately a love story, and a fabulous portrait of an unlikely Jewish pioneer: eye opening, beautifully crafted and deeply moving. SM
