| Résumé | Monkey Business est l'histoire de l'autre Israël. Une terre de crime et de pauvreté cachée sous l'image souriante du centre de Tel-Aviv. Nous suivons La famille Yair qui vit une bataille constante pour garder la tête hors de l'eau ; les petits crimes, les petites fraudes, les personnages douteux et les dettes monstrueuses sont leur seule façon de continuer. A land of crime and poverty hidden under the smiling image of the center of Tel-Aviv (the beating heart of Israel). The Yair family lives a constant battle to keep their heads above the water; small crimes, petty frauds, dubious characters, and monstrous debts are their only way to keep going. Giori (18) is the oldest of four siblings. He is the true hero of his family (and of the film), and yet he hasn't got much to show for it. Whatever he does seems turn into a disaster, and each time he tries to help he just gets everything wrong. As Hagai, the youngest brother is turning 13, his family sets a goal to celebrate his dream Bar-Mitzva. 13 is the age when religious Jews believe a boy becomes a man, but the Yair family couldn't care less – all they want is for Hagai to get this small fraction of sanity, this one day when he can have a normal party, and be just like everyone else. The family hassles up 1000$ and deposits it into Giori’s saving account, in order to save it until the Bar-Mizva is due. But Giori cannot betray his nature and soon enough all hell breaks loose. Giori gambles with his brother's money: he looses it all to the Mafia. Now he has just a few months to get it all back in order to save his own neck and maybe even his brother's birthday. Monkey Business is the story of Israeli fatalism. Under the dramatic and dark-comic battle of Giori is hidden a sad and uncompromising look at Israel as a place with no compassion. A place where classes do not intermingle, where welfare is a cruel joke and where the only way to survive is to lie, cheat, steal and keep on smiling. Giori’s story is a glance at Israel – uncut. A land at war with the world and with itself. |
