For decades, Prof. Benzion Netanyahu, father of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of Yoni Netanyahu, the late hero of the famed 1976 Entebbe Rescue, and of Dr. Iddo Netanyahu, physician, author and playwright, very rarely revealed himself to the media and the public. A documentary, created by Moshe Levinson and broadcast on Israeli TV on June 3, 2012, provides the first glimpse into the life of Netanyahu as a Zionist, an intellectual and a world renowned historian. In the film, Netanyahu recounts how he came to the defense of three defendants, wrongly accused of the murder of a prominent member of Ben Gurion’s Labor Party. He also tells of his membership in Jabotinsky’s Revisionist movement and of his work as one of the founders and then editor of the “Ha-Yarden” daily newspaper in the 1930s. Following the death of Jabotinsky in 1940, he became the head of the Revisionist movement in the United States. In this capacity, he worked tirelessly to raise Jewish and general public support in America for the creation of a Jewish State. Together with other members of the movement, he was the catalyst behind the Republican Party’s platform declaration in support of the establishment of a Jewish State during the presidential election campaign in 1944, which was closely followed by a similar Democratic declaration. These efforts gave rise to what has since become an ongoing political battle between the two parties for obtaining the Jewish vote. During his sojourn in the USA, Prof. Netanyahu also wrote his PhD thesis on the Medieval Jewish leader and philosopher Don Isaac Abravanel. After returning to Israel in 1948, following the establishment of the state, he was excluded from joining the Hebrew University due to his past political involvements, and started work on the newly formed Hebrew Encyclopedia in which he served as Editor in Chief until 1962. During the years which followed the Encyclopedia, some of them as professor at Cornell University, he pursued his monumental research on the history of the Jews of Spain. His acclaimed The Origins of the Inquisition, which was published in 1995, brought about a revolution in our understanding of the true cause for the establishment of the infamous and horrific institution which was devoted to the persecution of members of the Jewish race. The movie reveals Netanyahu as a man devoted to the Jewish People and the State of Israel and as an intellectual of profound depth and insight.
