Résumé	Asriel Stroon est un propriétaire veuf qui a amassé une fortune à Boston au tournant du siècle. Craignant que ses péchés lui aient fait perdre une chance d'être accepté au ciel, il retourne au "vieux pays" en Pologne et prie comme tombeau de son père pour que le Tout-Puissant efface ses péchés. C'est là qu'il découvre une vieille coutume juive : L'homme le plus riche de la ville "enchérit" pour l'étudiante maladroite mais brillante Shaya, pour l'obtenir comme époux de sa fille. Asriel voit que pour gagner un tel prodige pour sa fille, Flora est un moyen sûr de s'assurer un billet pour le paradis. Mais Flora veut épouser un médecin "américain" et le cadeau cher qu'Asriel lui a fait s'avère plus cher que le père assiégé que l'on avait négocié. Une comédie sentimentale d'assimilation s'ensuit, avec quelques rebondissements surprenants en cours de route. Asriel Stroon is a widowed landlord who has amassed a fortune in turn-of-the-century Boston. Fearful that his sins have lost him a chance to be accepted into heaven, he goes back to the "Old Country" in Poland and prays as his father's grave for the Almighty to wipe away his sins. While there, he comes across an old Jewish custom: The richest man in town is "bidding" for the awkward but brilliant student Shaya, to get him as a bridegroom for his daughter. Asriel sees that to win such a prodigy for his daughter, Flora is a sure way to secure himself a ticket to heaven. But Flora wants to marry an "American" doctor and Asriel's expensive gift to her turns out to cost more than the beleaguered father bargained for. A sentimental comedy of assimilation ensues, with some surprising twists along the way.
